Organics Recycling

.     Food Waste and Green Waste like wood, leaves, and grass clippings are all considered Organic Waste.  The State of California passed AB 1826 made it a law on April 1, 2016 that big businesses like warehouses, supermarkets, and large landscapers, that made 8 cubic yards of organic waste, needed to recycle it.  Then in 2017 the threshold went down to 4 cubic yards.  In 2019 the original plan was to then tell every commercial business that makes 4 yards of any type of trash every week, that they needed to make sure they were recycling and the state would see if they made enough progress.
California did not meet their goal and implemented SB 1383.  Now every business that has trash service needs to implement an organics recycling program if they produce over a specific amount of organic waste.  And when the state says this is mandatory recycling, they mean it.  In 2024, cities will be hiring agents, to look in your trash and make sure you are recycling all your food scraps and gardening waste or you will be fined.
-If your business makes less than 2 cubic yards of waste, your threshold is 10 gallons of organic waste.
-If your business makes more than 2 cubic yards of waste, your threshold is 20 gallons of organic waste.
These thresholds are the amount your organic waste would need to be under in order to receive an exemption from the city, from needing to have an organics recycling program.  The only way to get an exemption is to prove you make less than that amount every week.  Give us a call at (888) 768-2246 when you are ready to go over this with us, and we can help get you an exemption, or if the city does not accept the exemption, we can set up the recycling and get your business in compliance.
If you have food that you can give away to feed the less fortunate, that is always the best way to get rid of extra food.  You are protected by the "Bill Emerson Food Law Act" if you want to donate food, but are afraid of being sued for the food being expired.  As long as you are not purposefully giving away spoiled food you are protected by this law.  Please check out the link below for more information if you know you have good food that can go to the needy.  The first link is information about the act and the second is the best collection of food banks I've found on the internet.

When it comes to green waste, we always try to tell our businesses to have the landscapers take away the waste that is produced from your grounds.  They come in trucks and it is their business to know what to do with that waste and how to recycle it properly.  If they don't know where to take it, we can help guide them.  If they throw it away at your property, the state says you will need to recycle that green waste because it is organic and you will need a separate container for that as well.  When you call to ask about the exemption process please have your gardener's name and phone number.  If possible please find out what facility they recycle the green waste at.  We need that information to get your exemption approved.
If the organic waste you have can't be donated the state also says you can compost it yourself if you want, but businesses in LA County aren't out in the middle of nowhere.  You need lots of room and even more time for food and green waste to turn into real compost that you could sell back to the public or to farms.  For this reason, we can offer you the types of dumpsters you see below, for you to fill up and we'll haul them to state licensed facilities that will either compost, feed to animals, or pump into giant tanks that use bacteria to turn these organic materials into useable methane and soil amendments that help farmers use less water.

65 Gallon Tote
Most restaurants and businesses use this size because they don't have a lot of extra room in the kitchen or trash enclosure.

2 Cubic Yard Bin
If completely filled, this bin could fit between 250lbs and 2000lbs.  For that reason we do not offer any bigger size bins.  The wheels for these bins can not handle more weight.

20 or 40 Cubic Yard
These size containers would be good for a landscaping company to separate all their green waste from their trash.  It would also work for a special temporary cleanup of tons of waste.  If a refrigerator at the warehouse goes down or a reefer truck gets too warm, a few of these are the answer to get rid of a lot of unfortunate food waste.
